How Tony Robbins Sets Goals – Part 6

Congratulations, you’re doing it! You’re doing what 95% of American’s don’t do. You’ve taken the time to dream, plan and execute your vision for your life. Now I have to tell you, I’ve always been a dreamer, but when I discovered that dreaming + passion + work = realization of your dreams. It’s that simple, but yet that hard for many.

As I quoted my brother saying, “Success if often times dressed in overalls and looks like work”.

This is the one thing that scares the multitudes away. Somehow, many of us want the easy route to wealth, riches, health and happiness.

Got news for you – there ain’t no sucha thing… As my mom has always said, anything worth having is worth working for. If you get something to easy, you don’t have the same appreciation for it.
So in this pursuit of your dreams, find a way to embrace the challenge, for the reward is even greater than the challenge!

Let’s Review Part 5 – Gene gave us a specific distinction:

• Change your approach!
o Success is the result of good judgment
o Good judgment is the result of experience
o Experience is the result of bad judgment
• Don’t look at the things that didn’t work as a failure – look at them as learning experiences!
• Reframe – Ask yourself, “What is the lesson in this experience that I need to learn”.
o This reframe will change your life my friends!
o Some of the most successful people in the world fail their way to the top!

Ok – it’s now mid February and I’ve had to change my approach on several things so far. I’ve also had to look at goals for the quarter and revise them several times already. Actually, this has allowed me to be more specific in my focus. As long as I accomplish something on the list, I’m moving the ball 10 yards forward. It’s only when I stop and ponder, without motion that I don’t move the ball forward.

Here is one of the greatest examples of someone who has failed their way to the top:

How Tony Robbins Sets Goal – Part 2

Welcome back! I’m certain that you are enjoying and APPLYING this information right away – it’s the best way to achieve results and to get the things you want out of life. Again, if you follow me over the next few weeks I guarantee that you will experience a shift in your job search, career, and your life.

Let’s review Part 1 Gene gave 3 specific distinctions:
Know what you want – decide where you want to go.
o 95% of Americans don’t have written goals.
o Without aim we drift
o Reticular Activation System (RAS), part of brain that help convert images to reality.
Write your ideas down in detail
o Journal Your Ideas – this allows them to become real or to materialize (to become matter)
o Or Video tape or audio record your ideas to record (this is an easier process)
Find Pictures or images to surround yourself with
o Use a vision board (in our Career Mastery Program there is a great Vision Board Process)
o Use electronic vision boarding (Use the internet to grab images for your screen saver on your computer of smart phone)

Here’s how I’m using this part of the goals setting process for 2011:
I started by reviewing my wants – which included a review of what I wanted last year to see if anything transferred over to this year. i.e. health/fitness, relationship, family, business/career, etc. These are continually in my focus so I always bring elements of them forward – but also delete aspects of them based on my progress, growth or change of direction.

I’ve written down in detail what more I’d like to accomplish this year, which leads toward my “Outcome”. Remember, goals are milestones that lead to “Outcomes”. So when goal setting, always start with the question, “What is my outcome” i.e. to have a successful online e-learning university where I can share ideas with people that help them find their dream jobs. One way I keep track of this is by using a white board in my office so that I can interact with ideas on a regular basis. Many people write goals and don’t look at them again – you must be in touch with your ideas – they will serve you. More on this later.

I have a number of images that support my vision. In day 1 of our Career Mastery course, there is a chapter entitled, The Secrete of a Compelling Vision”. A vision is like a final destination, where are you going? What do you need to do to get there? I have a vision board that has been morphing over the past years and have updated mine this year. Also, my desktop computer is where I have a screen saver of my new visions playing. I recently gave an electronic picture frame as a gift to a friend that had images of his dreams on it – I call it an electronic vision board. Another simple thing you can do is surround your home with images, i.e. photos, magazines, art, clippings, etc. with images that support your vision.

Here’s an important thing to know about this part of the process – the brain doesn’t know the difference between a vivid dream and this state we call reality. Thus, as I say in my Leveraging Linkedin course, “If you can say it, and see it, you can do it!”.

Ok – I hope that has given you another layer of clarity as to how you can apply this information to your job/career search , which is your life.

How Tony Robbins Sets Goals – Goal Setting 2011!

Greetings and welcome to my blog! If you’ve followed me over the past few years, you’ll know that I love learning and sharing. In fact, 3 years ago I decided to write a book entitled, “How to Find Your Dream Job even in A Recession” (on amazon.com) and create a video based coaching website called “The Friend Zone.tv. Contrary to many of my friends who advised me not to use the name, I had to. I march to my own beat in life.

However, last year I had another epiphany, I re-branded my efforts in a website with a new look, I call www.DreamJobUniversity.com”. It’s here that you’ll find some amazing content, like my new “Leveraging Linkedin” Course – it has over 60 “How to” videos for generating guaranteed success using Linkedin if you are a job seeker. So if you are willing, please take the time to peruse my new site, but most importantly, take action and do whatever you must in order to live the life you dream.

As many of you know, we don’t have tomorrow, we may not even have the rest of today. So the time is now that you MUST do what it takes to embrace your path and live your passions.

The economy is just part of an ebb and flow system, but your dreams are with you always.

That being said, I’m inviting you to follow me for the next few weeks to get the most of this goal setting workshop – My good friend Gene McNaughton (former VP of Sales for Tony Robbins) is teaching this workshop.

This is a six part series that I’ve taken from our “Career Mastery” Course, based on my book, How to Find Your Dream Job, Even in a Recession; day 6, The Secret of Goals Setting. There have been studies to prove that people who write their goals, have an accountability process, and are committed, are much more successful than those who don’t. In reality, this isn’t rocket science. We’ll discuss this in more detain over the next few weeks.

This workshop is based on Tony Robbin’s actual goal setting process!

I’ve had the pleasure of studying with some of the most brilliant minds in Neuroscience over the past year and have found that pictures and images are SUPER important in the programming of your brain – Yes, I said programming.

In order to get your body to follow your mind, you must condition it – If you don’t believe me, try doing 100 push ups right now…. You didn’t even try! That’s my point, you’re brain isn’t conditioned to follow your mind, until you’ve conditioned to do so. Try tying picking up a pen from your desk – see how easy that is, you’ve done lots of conditioning for this simple task.

Thus, over the next few weeks, I’m going to share some ideas that will help your goals and dreams become real, but you must follow through – that’s how muscle is built. Instead of 100 push ups at one time – do 10 each day, then increase the amount gradually – it’s not the number that will give you strength, it’s the consistency.

The Bike Ride!

Some of you might ask, what the heck does a bike ride have to do with my job search or career transition? My answer is absolutely EVERYTHING!

Here’s the story – I was riding my bike around the city that I live in here in San Diego, and because I live in the hills, what goes down, must come up. In other words, if you ride down the hill, you have to ride back up (this applies to our economy as well; what goes down, will go up – it’s basic physics).

I did this particular trip to help manage some of the anxiety I was beginning to experience, which in my perspective is just energy that needs to be channeled, which ALWAYS works.

I believe that anxiety or stress is just bottled energy that needs redirecting and one way to redirect this energy is to change your physiology, do something that channels the stress (energy). This will help you to regain control of your mental state. Many of you who exercise regularly already know this to be true. For those of who don’t– have you ever seen a depressed athlete???

Back to the story. I was riding up the hill(s) to get back home after a nice 15-mile ride and noticed that whenever I focused on how big the hill was, my stamina would be challenged, I would feel like I didn’t have enough energy. It didn’t take long to realize that if I looked to far into the future (getting up that big, long hill), I would overwhelm my brain.

When I only focused on the road below my front tire and nothing else, I had enough stamina to make it as far as I needed….

Hmmm – do you see why the bike ride is so applicable to our journey in life and in your job search or career transition?

Are You Honoring Yourself?

Are you honoring yourself?

I would like to ask you to ponder this very serious question. In this current economy with the challenges that are all around us, are you still honoring yourself? You may ask, what does that mean?

Here’s a story that may help illustrate my point. I had a wonderful conversation with my wife, Michelle the other day about an art workshop that she attended. She and small group of artists have attended this once per year for the past 4 years at a private residence. The interesting thing is that many of the people who attended this year had not seen my wife, Michelle Matisse, in four years since she’d created her first ‘real’ painting.

When my wife Michelle had left our house on the way to the workshop, she was not in a very enthusiastic mood about her painting career. In fact, she was a little down because she has a day job, which she loves, but that is not her passion, this is a common story amongst us artist types!

The funny thing is that over the past four years, she’s been extremely busy and motivated getting her art “business” up and running. Michelle has been painting, teaching workshops, attending workshops around the world, posting lots of new art on Facebook and her own website (www.yessy.com/sacredspiralart). She’s really been applying herself 110 percent, in addition to having a day job, 2 loving children, with 2 cats (Yin and Yang) and a Yorkie (Buda), and a husband! For those of you who have a life outside of your day job, you’ll definitely appreciate this!

She’s also been in major self re-invention mode, which is the fuel for all of this. But in all that she’s been doing, it’s hard to see one’s own self and self accomplishments. So when she arrived at this workshop, she was greeted as a celebrity – which was completely shocking to her, but the interesting thing is that when you are busy doing the work and promoting yourself, you don’t often see what others see, because you are too busy in the trenches doing the work.

The great thing about this story is that the universe knows exactly what we need when we need it. Needless to say, the amazing reception Michelle experienced helped her to take a few moments to honor herself and the work she has been doing tirelessly over that past many years.

The truth is that the work never stops! There’s never a point when you stop and say to yourself, I have it all…. And if you ever do that, it’s only for a moment, because having it all requires a lot of work!!!
So for those of you who are in the world experience the ebb and flow of life and maybe not feeling as good about yourself due to life’s challenges as you have felt in the past, I share this story with you because my wife’s truth helped me to take a moment to honor myself just by her sharing the gift of her story with me.

“Changing the Paradigm for Job Seekers”


What’s your Story?

Ok, this is going to be short, but sweet! I had a conversation with a good friend of mine recently and the conversation triggered my awareness to something that is LIFE CHANGING IMPORTANT! Often times in life we have two modes; that of feeling good or great, and that of not feeling good (some would call that state feeling bad).

In our conversation, I made a huge distinction and that is, often time when we are feeling good or great it’s because our INTERNAL STORY that we are telling ourselves is a good story. Good feelings emanate, the sun is shining and there’s not a worry in the world.

However, when our INTERNAL STORY is not so good or (bad), we have the tendency to focus on what’s going wrong, how things aren’t working, how we are running out of cash, how bad the job market is, how the world is going to end by 2012…. You get the point.

This is all driven by our INTERNAL DIALOGUE. I go into more detail on this topic and the psychology of why this occurs in my book, “How to Find Your Dream Job, Even in A Recession”.

Anyway, the morale to this STORY is that I hope you are now aware of the stories you are telling yourself each day – this is the one thing that determines how you feel and WHAT YOU GET OUT OF LIFE EVERYDAY.

“If you’re not a Friend, you’re just another job seeker”


Which Box Are You In?

I just had the pleasure of delivering a tough love coaching session to someone who is in my Dream Job Online Coaching Program. The conversation was triggered by an event that occurred within the last 24 hours. Truth be told is that I had promised for a couple of months that I was going to make an introduction to a friend of mine who is a principal partner for a very busy architectural firm, but hadn’t done it. So in my recent conversation with him I took massive action and created an introductory email that included his resume.

Within 24 hours I had a response from my friend (hiring manager) stating, “While we are very busy, we are being very careful about hiring people at this time, however, I’m always interested in meeting very talented people.” Mind you, this is a multi-national architectural firm.

Now, I was absolutely delighted when I saw the email and expected a very enthusiastic phone call from my candidate. No – nada – nothing! I waited for a day before I made the call to ask if he had seen the email and he replied that he did. I naturally asked why he didn’t call me follow up on the opportunity. He then started to tell me his “STORY”, you know the thing that many of us do by default when we know that we are full of SHITE!

I listened, as I always do. Then I asked him a few questions, but the biggest question was, “Which Box Are You In?” He replied, “What do you mean?”

I told him a story about an amazing friend of mine named Kenrick Chatman, who has a website called The Career Catalyst.

Kenrick actually reaches out to top Authors, CEO’s, or anyone willing to share information that will benefit a job seeker in this economy. His show and blogs are AWESOME!

Kenrick was unemployed for almost one year before accepting an offer from a company recently. He created this show which allowed build relationships with anyone he targeted.

You see, Kenrick is a fearless person who will do anything that he can to position his brilliance as a savvy out-of-the-box solutions provider (which is what Corporate America resonates with – people who solve problems), which is why he is and will always be employed and employable.

I asked my candidate from Kenrick’s example, “Which Box Are You In?” I said, because Kenrick truly doesn’t even acknowledge that there is a box; but most of us live inside of the constraints of a box.

In fact, I challenged him to do the following:

1. Review and list everything you’ve done this month toward your job search
2. List how many networking, webinars, groups you’ve attended
3. Note whether any of the events gave you “Mission Critical Information”
Note – did you put the information to work or did you do like most people and listen with no action
(many people listen to great ideas and do nothing, they are all in the same box!!!)
4. List how many decision makers you were able to connect with as a result of this information
5. Be very honest with yourself – STOP the things that are not producing tangible results – they are just fillers. DO MORE of the things that produce results
6. Spend more time learning to be outside of your box, which is your comfort zone.

In other words stop doing what EVERYONE else is doing, especially if it’s not working. There are many support groups that exist where people are sharing stories of their struggles and other information, which can be useful, but I’m not a fan of “Pity Parties”, this is the time to be different in your approach.

I can tell more of this story, but the moral is very simple. If you are currently finding yourself in a place where you are not getting the results you need in your job search, ask yourself very honestly, “Which Box Am I In”.
